Our life story is composed of many small experiences and the narratives we construct from them. Events that are perceived as particularly emotional leave deep imprints. While we cannot often control events, we can decide the role they play in our life story. This requires firstly becoming aware of the events to which we attribute special significance. Secondly, it is essential to understand our own emotional world. How exactly does sadness feel to you? Where in your body do you feel anger? Which feeling do you often experience but find too elusive to put into words? With which situations do you associate this feeling?
To integrate challenging, difficult, or confusing experiences, those events strongly linked to emotions must be accepted, understood, and felt. Emotion-based art therapy provides space for emotions, while simultaneously inspiring an accepting, embracing, and non-judgmental attitude, enabling an authentically positive, holistic view of one’s own life story.
