In mindfulness-based art therapy, the focus is on consciously experiencing the present moment. What emerges and unfolds during the act of creation is observed, examined, and felt with curiosity and attention. Decisions are made, trials are conducted, exploration and experimentation occur, and reactions are intuitive and spontaneous.
In the final reflection, what emerged during the creative process is respectfully examined, perceptions are exchanged, and connections are made with the individual’s life story. Mindfullness-based art therapy usually includes sensory-oriented interventions, stimulating the different senses (hearing, seeing, smelling, feeling or even tasting).
